George Howard Hammil

hammillGeorge Howard Hammil, 89, of Largo, FL, a former Fairfield resident died Saturday, October 3rd. George was born in Fairfield April 7, 1926 to Howard and Allie Mae (Gray) Hammil. George was a well-known country singer in the local area and worked for many years as a country D. J. at WFIW. In 1965 George was awarded Country Music D. J. of the year for small market radio. He also owned and operated George’s Dairy Freeze for a number of years. George and his family moved to the Tampa Bay, FL area in 1971 where he worked for the Woolco Corporation.

After a near fatal heart attack at age 59, George once again took up his music career performing at nursing and assisted living homes, churches and various local events until his early 80s.

George was also a veteran having served in the US Army Air Corps at the end of WWII. George married Florence Jean Harris in 1949 and she preceded him in death in 1979.

He is survived by 5 children, Stephen and (Cheryl) Hammil of Louisville, KY, George, Jr. and (Linda) Hammil of Newport, NC, Susan and (Eric) Krull of Marietta GA, Sam and (Debbie) Hammil of Redington Beach, FL and Bruce Hammil of St. Petersburg, FL; 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

Funeral services for George Howard Hammil will be at Reese Funeral Home in Seminole FL on Friday, Oct 9th.
