Headlines for Monday, January 9, 2017

West Salem firemen were called to a mobile home fire a little after 5:15 Sunday evening. The home belonged to Danny and Rebecca McVaigh on North West Street in West Salem. When firemen arrived, firemen found flames coming out of one window and heavy smoke.  It took firemen about a half hour to bring the blaze under control. The home was considered a total loss.   No one was at home when the fire broke out. The cause remains under investigation. No one was injured.

An active weather pattern is shaping up this week across Southern Illinois. Gusty winds will develop today, followed by showers and thunderstorms Tuesday night through Thursday.  A wintry mix of precipitation is forecast for Friday and Friday night. Heavy rainfall is expected during some of the storms.

55-year-old Gregory Tribe of Albion was injured Friday when the pickup truck he was driving ran off the 161 Extension in Marion County and struck several small trees.  Tribe said he swerved to miss a deer.

Seventh grader, Trenton Jones has won the Center Street Geography Bee. He is the son of Terry and Joanie Jones. Eighth grader, Lucas Halbert, son of Patrick and Carrie Halbert was the runner-up.

Starting today, petitions may be picked up at Wayne-White Electric for a seat on the Cooperative Board of Directors. Three seats are up for election. They are seats currently held by Dale Harris in District 2, Andy Glover in District 3 and Jerry Williams in District 6. Petitions must be returned to the co-op no later than February 21.

The 98th Annual Meeting of the White County Farm Bureau has been set for January 18 at the Farm Bureau building in Carmi. Those planning to attend should RSVP the Farm Bureau office no later than this Wednesday, January 11.
