Loy G. “Toad” Corwin

loy corwin picLoy G. “Toad” Corwin, 83, of Carmi, Illinois, died Sunday, January 29, 2017, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana.  Toad was a welder, metal fabricator and machinist.  In January, 1952, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy along with Doug Ames, Omar Winter and Gary Cooper.  He served eight years in Korea and Japan.  Upon his discharge from the Navy, he went to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to work for Allis Chalmers Manufacturing from February 1956 to November 1968, when he moved back to Carmi.  He then worked for four years as a welder fitter and boiler maker for Babcock and Wilcox in Mt. Vernon, Indiana.  For more than 20 years, he operated his own welding business.  He was an active member of the American Legion and a Life Member and Past Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3851 in Carmi.

Survivors include daughter Christine (Tom) Sommerfeld of Princeton, Wisconsin; grandchild Stacy (Nathan) Ross; great grandchildren Wyatt Ross and twins Abigail and Evangelyn Ross, all of Hastings, Michigan; sister in law Violet Kawleski of Stevens Point, Wisconsin; niece Sandy Endicott of Crossville, Illinois; nephews Steve Johnson of Nashville, Illinois and Stan Johnson of Carmi.

In keeping with Toad’s wishes, his remains were cremated.  A memorial service will be at a later date.
