- An anonymous donation has been given to the Wayne City High School Scholarship Foundation that will provide 30 scholarships in the next 5 years. There will be 6 Wayne City Seniors selected each year for the next 5 years. Each year there will be a $5,000 scholarship for each of 2 students attending Rend Lake College, a $5,000 scholarship for each of 2 students attending Frontier College, a $10,000 scholarship for 1 student attending SIU in Carbondale, and a $10,000 scholarship for 1 student attending Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, IL. - Good Samaritan Regional Health Center Auxiliary Scholarship Applications Available -Mt. Vernon, Illinois – Good Samaritan Regional Health Center Auxiliary will be offering five $1,000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are planning a career focus in health care. To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must be in good academic standing and live within the hospital service area. Applicants need to have a major interest in a health care career/profession and been accepted by an accredited school or college offering training in the healthcare field. Applicants will also need to complete a personal interview with the Scholarship Committee. Applications can be picked up at the Guest Relations desk inside the visitors entrance of Good Samaritan Regional Health Center or by visiting smgsi.com. Applications must be returned by March 31. Applicants will be notified via email of their standing and if they will receive a personal interview. Interviews for auxiliary scholarship will be scheduled for April. The Amicum Sorority is awarding two $250 scholarships to non traditional students that are planning to attend or are currently attending FCC in Fairfield.
Applications for the scholarships are available at FCC & must be returned by Apr 15, 2013.
Monday, May 13th
Registration for the 2013 Summer Tennis Program will be at Lake Side Tennis Courts on Monday, May 13th and on Thursday, May 16th from 5 to 6 p.m. The program is open for boys and girls ages 8-18. Beginners are welcome. A practice day and a match will be held each week from June 1st through July 16th. Registration is $35. Contact Don Wood at 842-2555 for more information if needed.

We will be having a Pork-burger Sale to raise money for a new storage building at our facility, would appreciate all coming out and helping us reach that goal. Will be at the Old Star Station Parking lot with Mr. Merritt on May 24th.

Saturday, May 25th
The Medicine Shoppe/ Ed’s Rx and One Step Ahead and Home Medical Equipment will be closed this Saturday, May 25th and Monday, May 27th to celebrate Memorial Day. We will reopen on Tuesday, May 28th.
The Bluford Ruritan Club will be hosting a breakfast, Saturday May 25th., 7-9:30 am. Price is by donation and the menu includes pancakes, sausage, eggs, biscuits and gravy, orange juice, milk and coffee.
Where is the remaining piece of fence that was used to house livestock in the Nature Preserve? What is the name of the tree that was commonly used by Indians and pioneers to make canoes? Search for these answers and more as you hike through the Nature Preserve. Pick up the scavenger hunt description sheet and map between 11am and 1pm on Saturday, May 25th in the Visitors’ Center.
BCHFS will be holding their “Flying Colors” 5K run/walk on Saturday, May 25th. Registration will be from 10am to 10:45am and the race will kick off at 11am at the Baptist Children’s Home campus in Carmi, IL. Show up in a WHITE SHIRT, finish PLASTERED in PAINT. Let your colors fly, and let the fun begin! Registration / Entry Fee will be $30 (all proceeds benefit Baptist Children’s Home). There have been a few changes to the fair schedule this year, among them is a brand new feature event for the Saturday-evening finale. This year’s fair will take place June 14-22.

A fund raiser for The Guardian Center Inc. has been scheduled for Saturday, June 1st in the form of a “POKER RUN PARTY!” It will take place at Danny’s Pool Room beginning at 9:30-11:30am with registration. The donation is $10.00 per hand and $5.00 for extra cards. There will be 4 stops throughout the day then back to Danny’s Pool Room in Carmi to finish up. All bikes, cars and trucks are welcome!!!! The Fairfield Public Library has begun their summer reading program, “Have Book – Will Travel.” Grades 1st through 8th may still register for the program through June 1st. All books must be checked out from the Fairfield Public Library. On Friday, July 5th, from 9am to 10:30am a skating party will be held at Skateland Rollersport for all participants. The Fairfield Business and Professional Women’s Foundation is accepting scholarship applications for Wayne County High School Senior girls and mature women returning to college. All scholarships awarded will be valued at $2,000.00. All high school applications will be available in the guidance office. June 8 is fast approaching. Potato peelers, vegetable choppers, chowder stirrers, etc. are needed. Vegetable prep will begin at 6:00 a.m. Any help you could give would be much appreciated!! Food stand is also in need of workers. Dessert donations are needed and should be taken to the food stand that morning.
The Chamber of Commerce in Albion is proud to announce the return of the car show to be held in conjunction with the Annual Albion Chowder on Saturday, June 8th. The Chamber is seeking donations to help make this show successful. All proceeds from these events go directly to benefit the Roy M. Luthe Park and the Albion City Pool. Wayne County Golf Course will host its annual Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) benefit Golf Scramble on Saturday, June 15th. Lunch will be served at 12pm followed by a shot gun start at 1pm for 18 holes of play. Entry fee is $40.00 for members and $50.00 for guests. Individuals will be assigned to teams by captains. Saturday, June 22nd
On Saturday, June 22, SSM Hospice of the Good Samaritan will host its first grief camp for children who have experienced the loss of a loved one. Camp MAGIC (Mending a Heart, Grief in Children) is a free, one-day grief retreat for children, ages 5-12. The event will be held at Shriner’s Park in Mt. Vernon, IL, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Camp MAGIC is a safe environment where youngsters can openly express their feelings regarding the loss of a loved one, while having their fears or concerns addressed. Lori Reynolds, SSM Hospice Bereavement Coordinator, explained, “Throughout the day, the children will participate in special activities designed to facilitate positive coping techniques. In addition, Camp MAGIC will promote open communication among the children and their parents.” Staffed by professionals and trained volunteers, Camp MAGIC exists for the well-being, health, safety, and enjoyment of the campers. Each child will be paired with a volunteer to provide companionship, support and supervision throughout the day. Professionals will conduct age appropriate activities on grief, loss and recovery. SSM Hospice of the Good Samaritan’s Camp MAGIC is free of charge and is made possible by the SSM Hospice and Home Care Foundation. The Fairfield First General Baptist Church will host the General Baptist Youth Rally on Sunday, June 30th. Services begin at 6:00 pm. Saturday, July27th
The Wayne County Farm Bureau Young Leader Committee is hosting the 5th Annual Young Leader Golf Scramble at the Wayne County Golf Course in Fairfield on Saturday, July 27, 2013. Teams of four individuals can sign up to play in the tournament. Registration is $50 a person, and includes 18 holes of golf, cart, dinner, and prizes. Awards will be given out for the top team as well as longest put, longest drive, and closest to the hole contests; as well as a few side contests throughout the course. A John Deere Gator XUV 825i will be the hole-in-one prize on hole #17, sponsored by McLean Implement, Inc. Registration will begin at 12:00 p.m. with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. The event will conclude with dinner and the presentation of awards. Proceeds from the scramble will support Young Leader programs, including the annual Progressive Ag Safety Day, collegiate scholarship, Harvest for All, and participation in the state Young Leader events and programs. The annual Beta Eta Prince & Princes contest will be underway soon and contestants are needed. Boys and girls birth to 6 years of age, living in Wayne County, are eligible. A wallet size photo of the child, with the child’s name & age, parents’ names and phone number needs to be sent or emailed to Mary Stewart. Canisters displaying the contestants’ photograph will be located at various Fairfield area businesses. Canister locations and pictures of this year’s contestants will be published in the Wayne County Press. Canister locations is determined by a blind drawing. The boy and girl whose canister contains the most money will win the title of Beta Eta’s 2013 Prince & Princess. Beta Eta has been sponsoring our Prince & Princess contest for over 25 years and in that time have donated back to our community all the money collected by this event. All the money collected will be donated to local youth community projects. Each contestant will receive a “goodie bag” and the winners will receive some very special gifts.
