80-year-old McLeansboro resident, Edward (Eddie) Allen died at 7:56 p.m. Tuesday, July 16 at his home. A U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War, he had been a barber by trade. He served on the Mt. Vernon Township High School Board, the Mt. Vernon Downtown Development Commission; was an elected President of the Illinois Racking Horse Association and coached Khoury League baseball. During the 1980’s he was the radio voice of the McLeansboro Foxes Basketball on WMIX radio in Mt. Vernon. In 2000, Eddie started his morning radio program “The Cuzin Eddie Show” on WMCL McLeansboro. Over the course of 10 years, some of his guests included Kitty Wells, Eddie Rabbit and Billy Grammar. He sang, directed and coached barbershop quartets and choruses across Southern Illinois. He won an International championship in 1959, singing tenor with the KordKickers. He earned a second grand national title with “Allen’s Little Lou” during the AKC field trial championships in 1988. He won a third championship at the National Racking Horse Celebration in 1994 riding Shasta’s Delight.
Survivors include his wife, Sabrina Kae Allen; a brother, Howard Allen; three children, Daniel Allen of Dahlgren, Pamela Mandrell of Waltonville and Owen Allen of Ina; three step-children, Michelle Stevens, Nicole Karcher and Courtney Alvarez; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Cremation rites will be accorded and a celebration of life service will be planned for this fall.
