Foster has set August 20 as the trial date for double murder suspect Danny K. Coston of rural Carmi. Coston is awaiting trial on charges he shot to death 17-year-old Jessi Evans of Norris City and 22-year-old Jacob Wheeler of Centerville last August. On Wednesday, Judge Foster also admitted Coston’s fitness report and found no reason to doubt that he is mentally fit to stand trial. Coston’s lawyer has filed a motion to suppress statements his client made to police hours after his arrest. The motion will be argued June 11-13.

Former Mt. Carmel youth softball coach, 20-year-old Sarah K. Reilly has entered a guilty plea to charges related to having unlawful sexual contact with a player. In a plea agreement, Reilly pled guilty to a charge of battery and was sentenced to six months in jail and two years of probation. The judge stayed the jail sentence. Reilly now lives in Champaign.

48-year-old Frederick J. Zirkelbach of Ridgeway faces up to 10 years in prison when he is sentenced Sept. 20 on charges he was a convicted felon in possession of firearms. Police raided his home and recovered 14 firearms. He was indicted by a Federal Grand Jury on April 2.

Legislation increasing the speed limit on Interstate highways in Illinois to 70 mph is headed to Gov. Pat Quinn for his signature. The House approved the bill on a vote of 85-30 Wednesday.

Compromise Illinois House legislation to regulate the carrying of concealed weapons would ban guns in parks and on public transportation. An analysis of the bill shows the bill would also ban the carrying of concealed guns in athletic areas as well.
