83-year-old Carmi resident, Gene Ackerman, died Saturday, September 28 at Select Specialty Hospital in Evansville, IN. He was a retired farmer and attended First Baptist Church in Carmi. He was a trainer of thoroughbred horses and served as Regional President of the American Quarter Horse Association, and was a member of HBPA. He was active for over 50 years in county politics, serving as precinct committeeman in both Hawthorne and Carmi townships, and as the Republican County Chairman. He was a board member of Big Prairie School and was their basketball coach in 1953-54. He also played on a farm team in Florida for major league baseball.
Surviving are his wife Glenda; one daughter, Gay Hughes of Carmi; two sons, Doug and Kelly both of Carmi; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services for Gene Ackerman will be at noon Tuesday, October 1 at the Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi. Burial will be in Kingdom Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. Tuesday, October 1 until the time of service at the Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi.
