88-year-old McLeansboro resident, Hayward Lee Eggley, died at 10:25 p.m. Thursday, October 3 at McLeansboro Health Care and Rehabilitation Center in McLeansboro, IL. He was a retired radio announcer, working for WVLN-Olney and WAKO-Lawrenceville and was known as “Lee Hayward”. He was a retired Houseparent at Carmi Baptist Children’s Home in Carmi. He was a member of the Polk Lodge 137 A.F. & A.M. of McLeansboro. He was a graduate of Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO, a gifted Christian musician and professional trombone player and soloist, and attended the Dalhgren Baptist Church. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WW II.
Surviving are his wife Betty of McLeansboro; two daughters, Paula Webb of McLeansboro, IL and Betty Lou Kaio of Florida; five sons, Rev. Tom Eggley of Chatham, IL, Fred Eggley of Cape Girardeau, MO, Don Eggley of Akron, OH, Michael Eggley of Des Moines, IA and Denny Eggley of Centralia, IL; 17 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Hayward Lee Eggley will be at 10 a.m. Monday, October 7 at the Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro. Burial will be in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Glen Carbon, IL with graveside military rites by the American Legion Post #365.
Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, October 6 at the Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the Dahlgren Baptist Church, and will be accepted at the Harre Funeral Home in McLeansboro.
