Jared CarterA manhunt is underway in Crawford County, Ill.  for an inmate that escaped from the Illinois Department of Corrections Prison at Robinson, Ill. Friday morning. 30-year-old Jared Carter, an inmate serving a ten year sentence for residential burglary out of Bond County, Ill. walked away from a work crew late Friday morning.  According to officials with the Illinois Department of Corrections, Carter was working outside prison walls cutting grass when he escaped.  Carter was wearing prison-issued dark blue pants, but discarded his prison-issued shirt and hat. Those items were found near the prison.Illinois State Police, Department of Corrections officers and U.S. Marshals are conducting the manhunt, utilizing K-9 units and aircraft in the area.


Authorities have released the names of two motorcyclists killed Thursday afternoon in a two-vehicle crash Ill. on Epworth Road about two miles southeast of Carmi.  Michael Lynn Barton, 43 of 2108 Virginia St. in Evansville, Ind. and his passenger, D’Ella J. Ratley, 35 of Herrin, Ill. were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash shortly before 3:15 Thursday afternoon. White County Sheriff Doug Maier said a dump truck, driven by Robert L. Leffingwell, 69 of Carmi, Ill. apparently crossed the centerline and collided head-on with Barton’s motorcycle. Leffingwell’s truck then left the roadway and crashed into some trees, ejecting the driver.  Leffingwell was also pronounced dead at the scene.

A freak accident has claimed the life of a 3-year-old West Salem boy. James M. Clark, the son of Gloria L. Clark and Jeffrey Hunley was pronounced dead Thursday afternoon at the hospital in Olney. The child appears to have died from carbon monoxide poisoning. West Salem Police Chief Harvey Fenton says the Jeep Cherokee the boy was riding in had a faulty exhaust system, causing fumes to leak into the car. An autopsy is scheduled for later today to confirm the cause of death.

The Fairfield Board of Fire and Police Commissioners recently compiled a new eligibility roster. Candidates for the Fire Department are Jarad Blanton and Christopher Wise. Police candidates are:  Joahua D. Manahan, Blake R. Phillips. Ethan R. Hanrahan, Kody D. Moore and Andrew R. Conley.

A Richland County native has been named interim commander of the Illinois State Police District 12 Post at Effingham and the District 19 Post at Carmi.  Lt. Cory Ristvedt, a native of Parkersburg will assume command of the posts Sept. 1.  He replaces Capt. Morrie Fraser who has been named State Police Crime Scene Commander.

Fairfield’s delayed Fourth of July Fireworks Display will be Monday night at Southwest Park. Showtime will be after dusk.

The Grayville Days celebration opens this evening with an ice cream social and chicken noodle dinner. The event will feature plenty of musical entertainment, a parade at 3 o’clock Saturday afternoon and fireworks Sunday evening.
