Thieves broke into the Fairfield VFW Post over the weekend, stealing between $500 and $600 in cash.  The burglary – reported to City Police Friday morning, was captured on surveillance video. The intruder was wearing a light colored sweat shirt with the hood pulled up over his head.

Someone has stolen three sections of aluminum handicap ramps from the local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans.  The items – worth an estimated $1,500 were taken from the Auxiliary Police Department building in downtown Fairfield.

Area rivers continue to rise in the wake of nearly four inches of rainfall over the weekend.  The Wabash at Mount Carmel is forecast to crest at more than six feet above flood stage by this Saturday.  The Little Wabash at Carmi is forecast to crest later today at 30.06 ft.  The Little Wabash east of Fairfield was at 23.4 ft.

Julie Healy has been hired as the new Superintendent of the North Wayne School District and Cisne Middle School Principal effective July 1, 2014.  Julie currently serves as Principal of the North Clay High School at Louisville.

Leah Bowers, the daughter of Jerry and Jennifer Bowers of Barnhill is the winner of this year’s New Hope Spelling Bee.  The runner up is Lance Jolley, the son of Randall and Susan Jolly of Fairfield.

Volunteers for a Progressive Fairfield’s Festival of Lights Celebration is tonight at Leo French Park in Fairfield.  Santa and Mrs. Clause will be on hand, along with the Grote Family miniature horses.  Jan and Dean Linder will be providing free corn dogs and hot chocolate as well.
