A series of deadly tornadoes hit Illinois Sunday, leaving six people dead. Two elderly residents died in the small Washington County town of New Minden. Three Massac County residents died after a twister ripped through Brookport. One person died when a tornado destroyed much of the town of Washington, Ill. in Tazwell County.
Several people were injured and seven homes were heavily damaged or destroyed in the small Wabash County community of Friendsville. Wabash County Sheriff Joe Keeling reports he saw three separate tornadoes. The smallest one; said to be about 100 yards wide, did the most damage in Friendsville. The north side of Fairfield was damaged by high winds Sunday. The area around the golf course eastward to Northside Baptist Church sustained heavy damage. Trees fell across houses and power lines were downed. No injuries were reported in Fairfield.
The Mark and Jervaise McDaniel home in rural Edwards County was heavily damaged by Sunday’s twisters. Both were home and sought shelter in their basement, escaping injury.
A reception for retiring Wayne County Circuit Judge Joe Harrison has been set for this Friday at Foundation Hall on the campus of Frontier Community College. The reception will be from 1 – 3:30 and is open to the public. A program will begin at 2:15. Judge Harrison is retiring the end of this month after 17 years on the bench.
