smith_w250Officials confirm five people were shot and killed early Wednesday morning in a home in the small West Central Illinois town of Manchester.  The person believed responsible for the killings later became involved in a chase and shootout with police and later died of his injuries.  The victims ranged in age from an infant to a 65-year-old adult. A 6-year-old girl survived the attack. The suspect (pictured) has been identified as 43-year-old Ricky Odell Smith of rural Morgan County, IL.


L.T. Keyser reports to the Fairfield City Police Department that someone stole an air conditioning unit, a floor furnace and some sheet metal from his business at 1007 Bryan Street in Fairfield. No value was listed on the loss.

Responding to a report of a domestic disturbance Wednesday night, Fairfield City Police arrested a Michigan man wanted on an active warrant out of Clay County. 33-year-old John R. Hyder of Morenci, MI was taken into custody pending the posting of $450 cash bond. He was wanted for failure to appear in court on a DUI charge.

The Wabash River at Mount Carmel is forecast to rise to 30 ft. by this Sunday – eleven feet above flood stage.  The Little Wabash at Carmi is expected to rise to 30.3 feet by Monday – a little more than three feet above flood stage.

Legislation designed to reduce property tax bills for Illinois seniors is now law.  The bill raises the homestead exemption for Illinois residents age 65 and older by $1,000, from $4,000 to $5,000. The move could save seniors as much as $200 a year in property taxes.
