Brown - croppedThe girlfriend of convicted murderer Danny K. Coston of Centerville, Ill. is scheduled to stand trial next week in White County Circuit Court in Carmi. Candice M. Brown, 31 of Centerville, Ill. faces two counts of obstruction of justice for allegedly lying to police who were investigating the 2012 slaying of 22-year-old Jacob Wheeler of Centerville and Wheeler’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Jessi Evans of Norris City.  The jury trial is scheduled to begin next Tuesday, Jan. 21. Brown is accused of lying to White County Sheriff Doug Maier regarding the whereabouts of Danny K. Coston, her fiancé at the time.  The class-4 felony charges allege that Brown told the sheriff that Danny Coston had been at home with her in the early morning hours of August 26, 2012 – the time that Evans and Wheeler were slain.

Three small, but fast moving weather systems will move across the Tri-State starting this morning.  Some snowfall and very gusty winds can be expected today, Friday and Friday evening, and then again Saturday afternoon.  Wind chills Saturday are expected to drop to as low as 5 degrees.

42-year-old Patricia Bailey of Crossville has been sentenced to 4 years in prison after pleading guilty in White County Circuit Court to a conviction of unlawful delivery of a controlled substance.

Jesse G. Stephens, 31 of Carmi has drawn a 4 year prison sentence after pleading guilty to a conviction of aggravated domestic battery.  He drew a concurrent 4 year sentence after his probation on convictions of criminal damage to property and battery were revoked.

Following a bench trial in White County Circuit Court Wednesday, 29-year-old Josiah Griffin was found guilty of escape – a class-3 felony.  After pleading guilty last June to a charge of aggravated battery he failed to return from a court approved furlough to begin serving a 3 year prison sentence. Sentencing has been set for March.

Upward Basketball and Cheerleading registration and evaluations will be held this Friday from 6 – 8 p.m. and Saturday from 9 – 3 at the Cumberland Presbyterian Church Christian Life Center in Fairfield. Registration forms may be picked up and forms and fees returned to the church.  Practice will begin on Feb. 3 with games being held each Saturday, Feb. 22 – March 29.
