Mugshot_costonA May 21 trial date has been set for Danny K. Coston of rural Centerville.  Coston is accused of murdering 22-year-old Jacob Wheeler of Centerville and Wheeler’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Jessi Evans of Norris City.  Judge Thomas Foster denied a defense request to allow contact visits for Coston at the White County jail.  Coston remains in custody under $3 million bond pending trial.

39-year-old Shelly M. Curnell of Salem, KY was killed Wednesday afternoon when her car ran off Ill. Rt. 1 near the Gallatin/Hardin County line and hit a tree.  The crash happened shortly before 1:30 Wednesday afternoon.

Reports of a man with a gun walking down SW 7th Street in Fairfield Wednesday afternoon resulted in a lockdown of Fairfield Community High School.  The incident happened around 3:15, and resulted in students participating in track practice being moved inside the school. Police later found the individual – a 14-year-old boy with a BB gun on Rosewood Lane. The teen was questioned and released.

27-year-old Amy Ramsey of Waltonville has been sentenced to eight years in prison for her role in the robbery of the Jefferson County Schools Credit Union in Mt. Vernon last December.  As part of her guilty plea, Ramsey has agreed to testify truthfully in court about her co-defendants.

The Centralia Mighty Orphans have won the USA Today High School Sports’ Best Mascot competition and a $2,000 grand prize for their school’s athletic department.  The Orphans gathered 31.5 million votes, defeating their nearest competitor, the Price Utah Dinos who received a little more than 13 million votes.

March EOM Amber Lane RT(R)(CT)Amber Lane of the Fairfield Memorial Hospital’s Diagnostic Imaging Department has been named the hospital’s Employee of the Month for March.  She has been at Fairfield Memorial since 2008.

 

Logan Coplea has taken first place at the Modern Woodmen Speech Contest held at Geff Grade School.  Logan is a 6th grader and son of Tara and Jeremy Horton and grandson of John and Sandy Coplea.  Second place was taken by Andrew Haile, the 8th grade son of Cassie and Donna Haile. Logan and Andrew will advance to the County Speech Contest April 18 at Jasper Grade School.

Illinois State Police will be conducting a Roadside Safety Check in Wayne County on Saturday, April 13.   A second safety check will be conducted in Hamilton County on Saturday, April 27.
