22-year-old Justin DeRyke has been formally charged with three counts of first-degree murder for the slaying of his niece, 7-year-old Willow Long of Watson. Bond has been set at $5 million. DeRyke told State Police investigators his niece fell onto a brush pile, causing her neck to be impaled on a stick. To end her suffering, DeRyke told police he slit her throat and stabbed her several times. He added that he placed her body in a plastic bag and dumped it near the Little Wabash River south of Watson.
A Wayne City teen was cited for drunk driving Wednesday night after the Toyota Camry he was driving ran off the road and overturned in a ditch. The 15-year-old was not identified by State Police investigators. A passenger, 20-year-old Sarah Marvel of Wayne City was cited for underage drinking and permitting an unauthorized person to drive.
The Fairfield Memorial Hospital Auxiliary recently purchased a Hematek Slide Stainer for the hospital lab. The instrument will be used in the Hematology department. It is a self-contained system that transports prepared slides automatically through the staining process without human intervention. The four day manhunt for an inmate that walked away from a work detail at the Robinson State Prison last week was very costly. Officials said the cost of added personnel and fuel will likely top $100,000. Inmate Jared Carter was found walking down a city street in Palestine.
Registration for the Fairfield Fall Fun Fest 5-K Run/Walk event is 4:30 this afternoon. The event starts at 6 p.m. The Fun Fest Prince and Princess Contest is at 6:30. Also featured tonight will be performances by the Roasted Chestnuts at 6:30 and King City Swing at 7:30 on the main stage.
