A significant and extended heat spell is in store for most of Southern Illinois. Afternoon temperatures will likely be in the mid 90’s by mid-week. With dew points near 70 degrees,  heat index values will rise to 100 to 105. The heat wave is expected to linger into early next week.

A new sentencing date has been set for a Mt. Carmel man convicted of murdering an elderly Lawrenceville man last year. Sentencing of 22-year-old Tyler R. McQueen has been moved to Friday, Oct. 11 in Lawrence County Circuit Court.  He stands convicted of the stabbing death of Robert V. Westall at his home in Lawrenceville.

The quality of Illinois’ apple crop is much better this year because of better growing conditions.  Officials at the University of Illinois say this year’s apple crop is very good, and sales are brisk.

EOM Laura Witherspoon August SurgeryLaura Witherspoon has been named the Employee of the Month at Fairfield Memorial Hospital.  Witherspoon works in the Surgical Services Department. She has worked there the past six years as a Central Sterile and Surgical Scrub Technician.

Harv Keyser, the 3-year-old son of Ryan and Michelle Keyser of Geff showed the grand champion Berkshire Gilt at the DuQuoin State Fair on Sunday.  Harv won the honor last year as well. Harv weighs 45 pounds – the hog he showed weighed 400 pounds.

Illinois residents can use their cellphones to prove they have auto insurance. Residents can now download a program on their smartphone that shows they have up to date auto insurance.  The law that permits paperless proof of insurance goes into effect immediately.
