A citizen’s group from New Harmony and White County has come up with a proposal to re-open the New Harmony Bridge. The group would like to buy the bridge for $1, issue bonds to make repairs then repay the bonds over time with money from bridge tolls. The bridge has been closed since May of 2012 after major structural deficiencies were found. No action has been taken on the proposal.  The bridge is currently owned by the White County Bridge Commission, which is made up of  three members – two from Illinois and one from Indiana.

42-year-old Scott Schroder of Chester, IL was killed Monday when a deer crashed through the windshield of his vehicle.  The deer had been struck by an oncoming vehicle which sent it flying through Schroder’s windshield.

Wayne County property tax bills will be mailed out on Friday, Sept. 20. The first installment will be due on Friday, Oct. 25. The second installment will be due on Friday, Dec. 6.  The amount to be collected this year amounts to $12.4 million.

Riverboat casinos in Illinois want to remain open for business around the clock.  The Illinois Casino Gaming Association is asking state regulators for approval to operate 24 hours a day. Currently, no casino can be open more than 22 hours per day.

An adult Flu Shot clinic is underway daily at the Wayne County Health Department in Fairfield.  The vaccine is available daily at the health department from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. for a $30 fee.  Medicare Part B, Medicaid, major credit cards, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Health Link and Health Alliance insurance coverage will also be accepted for payment.
