Heat index values could climb to 105 today. The oppressive heat and humidity is expected to linger through Friday when a cold front arrives, bringing a chance for thunderstorms and somewhat cooler weather.

49-year-old Deborah L. Potter of Laurel Street in Fairfield was arrested Tuesday afternoon on preliminary charges of aggravated assault and disorderly conduct.  Potter is accused of threatening Wayne County Humane Society worker Amanda Cline as she was trapping feral cats in the neighborhood.

Dr. Palepu PhotoDr. Sai Palepu has joined the staff of Hamilton Memorial Hospital. He recently completed his residency at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, TX. He will be working in the Family Clinics at McLeansboro and Norris City as well as the Emergency Room in McLeansboro starting late July.

James Hosick of Mount Erie reports to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department that someone has stolen 13 chickens from his residence. Hosick said he returned home from the Wayne County Fair and discovered the chickens had been stolen. They had a reported value of $30.

The Wayne County Farm Bureau will hold its annual Member Appreciation Dinner on Friday, August 9 at the CP Church in Fairfield.  Tickets are $2 each and are available at the Wayne County Farm Bureau through August 2.

Wayne County’s Got Talent is the featured event at the Wayne County Fair tonight.  Thursday night, the local band Double Wide Debris will perform with the fair wrapping up with Moto Cross action Friday night and a Demo Derby Saturday night.
