Headlines for Wednesday, September 4, 2013

The 2013 Wayne County Crop Tour was completed Tuesday. The forecast corn yield for Wayne County came in at 160 bushels per acre. The forecast soybean yield is 38.6 bushels. The tour was sponsored by the Wayne County Corn Growers and the University of Illinois Extension.

After two days of searching, the body of a Carmi teen that drowned Monday in Rend Lake has been recovered. The body of 18-year-old Emilie Jo Turrentine was found shortly before 2:30 Tuesday afternoon in about ten feet of water. She was a senior at the Carmi-White County High School and was enrolled in college classes at Southeastern Illinois Community College in Harrisburg.

Fairfield Banking Center

Work is well underway on the construction of the new Fairfield Banking Company, located at 915 Commerce Drive on Fairfield’s west side.  The bank is a branch of the Clay City Banking Company and is managed locally by Gary Griffith. Weather permitting; the facility should be completed later this year. Pictured above is an artist’s rendition of the new bank.

Resident Wayne County Circuit Judge Joe Harrison has announced plans to retire.  Judge Harrison plans to retire on November 30.  He has served as the Wayne County Circuit Judge since his election in 1996 when he defeated Alice Jordan.

Carter II

An escapee from the State An Prison at Robinson was captured Tuesday afternoon in the small Crawford County community of Palestine. A local resident spotted 30-year-old Jared Carter and called 911. Carter was taken into custody without incident. Carter was serving a ten year sentence for residential burglary when he walked away from a work detail outside the prison walls last Friday.
