77-year-old Golden Gate resident, Morris E. Burkett died at 10 p.m. Monday, May 19 at his home. He was an instructor at Wabash Valley College in Mount Carmel. A veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, he had also served as a Christian Church minister for 50 years in Central and Southern Illinois.
Survivors include his mother, LaVera Moore of Fairfield; his wife, Maxine Burkett of Golden Gate; three sons, Steve (Peggy) Burkett of Jonesboro, Arkansas, David (Sheryl) Burkett of San Angelo, TX and Mark Burkett of Golden Gate; two daughters, Susan Cooper of Evansville and Elaine (Michael) Lacy of Seneads Ferry, NC; a sister, Linda (Phillip) Johnson of Patoka, IN; a brother, Delbert Burkett (Ruth) of Ellery; 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Per his request, the body will be cremated with a private service and burial at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Oil Belt Christian Camp building fund or the Oblong Children’s Home, and will be accepted at Nale’s Funeral Home in Fairfield, which is in charge of all of the arrangements.
