Atraxia in Albion is among 7 Illinois businesses who now have state approval to grow marijuana.  The Illinois Department of Agriculture released the names of the seven authorized growers Thursday.  Eleven other centers have state permits but do not yet have official authorization to start growing the crop.  Growers expect sales to begin later this year.

Illinois is among 23 states that permit marijuana for medical use, but resistance from some in the medical establishment has prevented some doctors from prescribing the drug.  Southern Illinois Healthcare and Southern Illinois University are preventing doctors from formally recommending marijuana, citing the federal view of the drug as a controlled substance with no accepted medical use.

An episode of Investigation Discovery’s show “Nightmare Next Door” that features a local case with be re-aired this afternoon at 3:00 p.m.  The episode, titled “Into The Woods”, recounts the 2012 murders of Jessica Evans, 17, of Norris City and Jacob Wheeler, 22, of Carmi.  The episode is also available for download on Amazon.

A 16-year-old Benton High School student died Friday night in a one-vehicle crash on the Akin Blacktop.  Franklin County Coroner Marty Lefler identified the teen as 16-year-old Lacy K. Hood.  Hood was travelling westbound on the Akin Blacktop around 11:05 p.m. Friday when her car left the roadway and struck a utility pole.  Hood was the only person in the vehicle.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.  The crash remains under investigation.

An organizational meeting for FCHS After Prom 2016 will be held this Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the back room at Dimaggios.  All parents are encouraged to attend.
