A west Salem man was sentenced to five years in prison on charges he battered a 4 ½ month old family member. Christopher R. Cleveland entered an Alford plea to the charges and was sentenced yesterday in Edwards County circuit court. Cleveland received the maximum sentence available to the judge for the offense. The case was investigated by the Illinois State Police.

Two Hamilton County men were arrested and charged with burglary and obstructing justice. 41-year-old David P. Compton and 28-year-old Gary D. Carter are accused of taking several items from a building owned by Mary Kay and Jimmy Davis. The items were recovered after a search warrant was issued on property in rural Hamilton Co. The suspects gave false names when ask for identification. Bond has been set at $50,000 and both are being held in the White Co. jail at Carmi.

32-year-old Brandon D. Raymond of Grayville was sentenced to five years in prison Friday, after his probation was revoked on a 2012 conviction of being in possession of a controlled substance. Raymond’s probation was revoked after he tested positive drug use and his arrest on a weapons charge.

The 7th annual Wayne County tractor drive is set for this Labor Day, September 7th. Check in will begin at 8am at the Wabash Valley Service company in Cisne, with departure at 9am. The group will have lunch at the Mt. Erie Ruritan building, catered by Crystals Country Cream. The tractors will return to Cisne around 3pm. Registration is $30, call the Wayne County Farm Bureau with any questions at 842-3342.

The Fairfield swimming pool is ending its season this weekend. The pool at Leo French park will be open today and tomorrow from 1 – 5.
