Southern Illinois residents can expect a break from the recent heat wave as a cold front is expected to sweep through the area by mid-week. The best chances for thunderstorms will be Wednesday into Thursday. After the front passes, high temperatures are expected to settle back into the 70’s

23-year-old Linda J. Cross of Baton Rouge, LA was seriously injured Saturday when she fell at Garden of the Gods. Saline County officials said she fell about 15 feet and suffered a head injury. She was airlifted from the scene to a hospital in Evansville.

American Coal Company has announced plans to lay off 110 workers at its mine in Galatia. This is the second round of layoffs at the Galatia mine. American Coal laid off about 85 workers in May.

19-year-old Danny C. Hinds of Albion faces up to 16 years in prison when he is sentenced October 6, Hinds has entered a guilty plea to charges he shook a two-year-old boy, causing the child to suffer multiple bone fractures. The plea agreement calls for a 16 year prison cap.

45-year-old Frank L. Eaton of Albion has been jailed on drug charges following a traffic stop last Friday in Mount Carmel. Eaton faces charges of possession of marijuana, methamphetamine, hypodermic needles and drug paraphernalia.

The 7th annual Wayne County Tractor Drive is today. This year’s drive will begin and end at the Wabash Valley Service Company plant in Cisne. Recognition will be given for the most original unrestored tractor, oldest tractor, youngest driver and the driver who traveled the furthest to be at the event. The oldest driver will be recognized with the Earl Smith Memorial Award.
