Clarence J. “Books” Kaufman, age 85, a resident of McLeansboro, IL passed away at 10:36 am on Thursday, April 14th, 2016 at the Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro. Mr. Kaufman was the retired owner of the former Kaufman’s Package Store north of McLeansboro, he also worked for the State of Illinois Department of Agriculture, and he owned & bred thoroughbred horses.  He was a charter member of the B.P.O.E. #1882 in McLeansboro, and a charter member of the Eagles Lodge in McLeansboro.

He is survived by his wife Ottilee (Mitchell) Kaufman of McLeansboro, 2 sons: Randy Lee Kaufman and Joseph Ray Kaufman, both of McLeansboro, a daughter Dixie (husband Thomas) Norris of Lexington, KY; 5 grandchildren:  Katherine Lee (husband Steve) Siereveld, Ann Elizabeth Pattan (husband Jason), James Joseph  Norris, Katie Beth Kaufman, and Nathan Lee Kaufman; 4 great grandchildren:  Megan Elizabeth Siereveld, Ryan Matthew Siereveld, Alexander Tommy Pattan, and Jonathan Norris.

Funeral services for Clarence J. “Books” Kaufman will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, April 18th, 2016 at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro with burial in Hopewell Cemetery near McLeansboro.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Sunday, April 17th at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro.

Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or to the Elks Crippled Children’s Fund, and will be accepted at the Gholson Funeral Home in McLeansboro which is in charge of all the arrangements.
