ANOTHER FATAL HOUSE FIRE – Authorities have released the name of a Maunie man killed in a house fire Friday. The victim has been identified as Robert A. Grant, Jr. 62 of Maunie. According to the White County Sheriff’s Department deputies, the victim’s wife, 38-year-old Dawn M. Grant was awakened by the smell of smoke in their house. She told police she had been sleeping on the couch with her husband asleep on a nearby loveseat in the living room.Mrs. Grant exited the house and went to the Yates residence across the street for help. Deborah Yates and her husband came out and tried to help her get Robert out of the house. It was then that a loud explosion came from inside the home. Mrs. Grant and the Yates backed away from the burning home. Mrs. Grant said she believed the explosion could have been from her husband’s oxygen tank. The victim’s body was found inside the home by firefighters with the Carmi Fire Department.
The Fairfield Community High School Mulebackers will be hosting their annual “Bingo & Silent Auction Night “ on Saturday, January 27th, 2018 at 7pm in the Fairfield American Legion Hall. This fundraising event is once again being held in honor if all local Veterans. As such, all Veterans will be granted their first set of bingo cards free to the event with proof of ID. A portion of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to the Veteran’s Memorial Park renovations at Lakeside. The community is invited to come out and support not only the Mulebackers, but our local Veteran’s in attendance and community upgrades. Several area business and individuals have generously donated items toward the silent auction.
The Wayne County Crimestoppers Board met Thursday evening, voting to pay a $100 cash reward for information that led to the arrest of a drug suspect. The information resulted in the arrest of 34-year-old Christopher Johnson of Fairfield on a felony charge of manufacture or delivery of between 30-500 grams of marijuana. Johnson is slated for a preliminary hearing on the case on January 22nd. Carmi City police report the arrest Thursday of 27-year-old Ashley M. Bebout of Carmi on an Edwards County warrant charging her with failure to appear on court. Bond was $225. And, Mark Hall of Railroad Street in Carmi reports that someone entered his home and stole his laptop computer. No value was listed on the loss.
The Fairfield City Council will have their regularly scheduled meeting on Tuesday, January 9th in the council chambers of city hall. Items include discussion of an ordinance regarding the Redevelopment Agreement with Kieffer Development,Inc. Also slated on the agenda is Ruth Ponder of Payment Service Network, Inc., and an update on the Local Debt Recovery Program will be provided.
The entire village of West Salem is underneath a BOIL ORDER until further notice. Customers need to boil their water to be used for human consumption. A few days ago, the boil order that was in effect for West Salem was lifted. This is a new boil order that is now in effect.
