Barbara Wood, 94, a longtime resident of Fairfield, IL passed away at 11:50 am on July 26, 2019 at her home surrounded by her family.
Per Barbara’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded, and her family will hold a private celebration of her life at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association.
Barbara was born on February 18, 1925 in Detroit, MI, a daughter of Edna and Wilbur DeKalb. She married Donald J. Wood on November, 23, 1948. Surviving are a son, Michael Wood of Montgomery, TX , a daughter, Cathy (Cal) Roth of Ponte Vedra Beach, FL; and grandson, Blaise Roth of Chicago. Also surviving are a granddaughter, Megan (Brian) Kerls of Parker, CO; and grandson, Brendan (Christa) Wood of Denver, CO; great-grandchildren, Lyla and Jonathan Kerls. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Donald (DJ) Wood, and her wonderful daughter, Susie (Scott) Jennings.
Barbara adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and spent as much time with them as she could. She enjoyed teaching at FCHS for many years, and loved playing golf with her many friends. Barbara and Don also owned and operated The Wood Shop at the Fairfield Country Club after they both retired from teaching. Barbara enjoyed traveling with family to wonderful beach vacations, and she spent a lot of time visiting her family in Texas and Florida. Barbara also loved writing poetry. She found joy in singing with the choir at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Fairfield. She never missed an opportunity to help someone, and will be greatly missed by those who had the pleasure and privilege to know and love her.
