Headlines for Sunday, July 5th

A good crowd viewed the fireworks display in Fairfield Saturday night.  The display was shot off from SW Park in Fairfield.  The display began a few minutes after 9 p.m. and lasted about 25 minutes.  There were no ground displays this year.  A video of the fireworks display has been posted on our Facebook page.

862 more cases of the coronavirus were reported in Illinois Saturday, and nine additional deaths.  Reports indicated Franklin County had two new cases Saturday, while Williamson County had one new case.  White County reported a new case this past Friday.  Statewide totals for the virus stand at 146,612 cases and 7014 deaths.  The number of daily cases of the virus in Illinois has stayed below 1000 since early June.

The Illinois State Police Division of Internal Investigation reports the arrest of a state trooper on possession and manufacture of a controlled substance charges.  40-year-old District 11 Trooper Nolan Morgan of Greenville, IL had been assigned to the District 11 post at Collinsville, IL.  ISP Division of Internal Investigation officials began an investigation this past Thursday of Morgan after receiving internal information that he was allegedly involved in the manufacture and possession of drugs at his residence.  A search of his residence yielded 259 grams of psilocybin mushrooms packaged for delivery, according to the state police news release.  Morgan is being held in the Bond County Jail on $150,000 bond pending a court appearance.

Edwards County Treasurer Debbie Smith is reminding taxpayers in the county that the due date for 2020 Mobile Home taxes is July 31st.  A late fee of $25 will be assessed starting August 1st.  An additional $25 fee will be added each month the tax is delinquent.  The 2020 extension for mobile home taxes is just over $23,300.  The 2019 extension was just over $25,800.

Area river stages this morning:  Little Wabash River east of Fairfield is at 8.68 feet.  Flood stage is 17 feet.  At Clay City the stage is 6.34 feet.  Flood stage is 18 feet.  At Carmi the river is at 17.16 feet.  Flood stage is 27 feet.  The Skillet Fork at Wayne City stands at 6.23 feet.  Flood stage is 15 feet.  The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 7.51 feet.  Flood stage is 27 feet.  Daily chances for pop-up showers and thunderstorms are in the forecast each day this week, with the higher chances on Monday and Tuesday.
