Andrew Jackson Mayo – Fairfield

ANDREW JACKSON MAYO, 95, of Fairfield, Illinois, formerly of Johnsonville, Illinois passed away at his home Sunday, September 27, 2020.

Andrew was born February 13, 1925 in Cisne, Illinois: to Ross and Elma (Schell) Mayo. He married Shelia E. Pennington on February 14, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri. Shelia preceded him in death on March 28, 2014.

Andrew worked as a Trunkline Gas operator and was also a farmer. He helped 40 plus years at the Union Grove Church Camp.  He also enjoyed going on mission trips with the church. Andrew will be remembered for his kindness of helping other people and collecting bibles to give away to others. He and his wife Shelia were Youth Directors at Providence General Baptist Church for the Union Grove Association Youth for over 40 years. He was always eager to volunteer at the church. Andrew was a key maintenance employee at the Fairfield McDonald’s for many years. When Andrew took time for himself, he enjoyed gardening, fishing, and most of all spending time with his family. He was a member of the Providence General Baptist Church and the American Legion of Fairfield, Illinois.  Andrew was a WWII veteran who served in the 82nd recon battalion of the 2nd armored division, Hell on Wheels.  He landed on Omaha Beach D-day plus one, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and served 18 months in France, Holland, Belgium, and Germany.

Andrew is survived by two daughters, Diann Bennett of Xenia, Illinois and Lisa (Tom) Konopasek of Fairfield, Illinois; one sister Gertrude Willamson of Minerva, Ohio;  nine grandchildren: Tracy, Bryan, Travis, and Shane Bennett; Tiffany Lyons; Hunter and Mark Konopasek; Kim Wergin; Michelle Pogodzinski; fifteen great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife Shelia; one daughter Sandra Henson; two sons-in-law Donald Henson and Richard Bennett; two great grandchildren: Mandy and Drew Bennett; two sisters: Dorothy Roy and Ethel Hilliard; one brother Roy Mayo, and his parents.

Funeral services for Andrew Mayo will be held 10AM on Thursday, October 1, 2020 at Providence General Baptist Church.  Burial will be in Johnsonville Cemetery.  Visitation will be Wednesday, September 30, 2020 from 4-7 PM at Hosselton-Meridith Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to Union Grove Church Camp or the Honor Flight Memorials and may be dropped off at the funeral home at 305 Park Street Cisne, Illinois; or may be mailed to Hosselton-Meridith Funeral Home at PO Box 418 Cisne, Illinois 62823.
