Larry Cecil Smith – Wayne City

Larry Cecil Smith, a resident of Wayne City, IL passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon, IL.

Larry was born on June 24, 1938 in Farmer City, IL to his parents Clay Isaac Smith and Ilene (Thomason) Smith (Miley).  On June 4, 1961, he married Sharon Lea (Flannigan) Smith at the First General Baptist Church in McLeansboro, IL.

Larry worked as a truck driver and heavy equipment operator at various locations including ICI Explosives, R&R Trucking, Schumm Trucking, Barnard’s, Les Wilson Inc. and various oil fields.

He was a former member of the Wayne City Saddle Club and he attended the Wayne City Baptist Church.  He enjoyed camping, gardening, horseback riding, taking care of his cows and calves on his farm, and spending time with his family.

Larry is survived by his wife Sharon Smith of Wayne City, 2 daughters: Sondra Holleman of Wayne City and Kellie (Brett) Brashear of Iuka, IL; a brother Allen “Red” Smith of Wayne City, brother-in-law Don (Rhonda) Flannigan of Mt. Vernon, IL; 5 grandchildren: Cory (Emmalee) Holleman, Chelsea (Ryan) Greene, Jessica (Matt) Canon, Clinton Brashear, and Cassie (Jamie) Nattier; and 7 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by 2 sisters: Donna Wilson and LaVerne Campbell, a brother-in-law Ronald Flannigan, and 3 nephews.

Graveside Funeral Services for Larry Cecil Smith will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at the Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City with Bro. Gary Rayburn officiating.  Those attending are asked to please meet directly at the cemetery and to follow all guidelines regarding wearing of masks and maintaining social distancing.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at Young Funeral Home, which has been entrusted to provide arrangements.
