Lanny Alan and Betty Ruth Stocke – Carmi

Lanny Alan Stocke, 76, and his wife, Betty Ruth (Gibbs) Stocke, 74, both of Carmi, Illinois, died and met face-to-face with their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 23, 2021, near Ullin, Illinois, as a result of a truck/cargo train accident. Their beloved dog, Daisey, also perished in the accident.

Lanny was born August 1, 1944, in Burnt Prairie, Illinois, the son of Veriel Charles Stocke and Alma Wave (Kisner) Stocke.  He was a farmer and owned and operated the Sumpter Berry Farm.  He never met a stranger, and was an ordained minister and lay speaker.  He was a member of the Concord Methodist Church and a member of the Freemasons Carmi Lodge 272.

Ruth was born July 8, 1946, in McLeansboro, Illinois, the daughter of Byford G. Gibbs and Edith Marie (James) Gibbs.  She was a retired school teacher.  She enjoyed gardening and making pies from the fruits from the Sumpter Berry Farm, earning her the nick name “pie lady”.  She was a member and pianist at the Concord Methodist Church.  Ruth was very nurturing and enjoyed her grandchildren.

Lanny’s survivors include sons Matthew (Malysa) Stocke of Georgetown, Indiana, Tyler (Janette) Stocke of McKinney, Texas; daughter Shannon Smith of Carmi; step daughter Tonya Moore of Chicago, Illinois; sister Marsha Weaver of Sherman, Texas; grandchildren Ryan (Candice) Stocke, Chris (Elissa) Smith Trae Smith, Lain Stocke, Mason Stocke, Shelby Stocke, Carson Stocke, Rubin Spiegel, Jamison Semla, Dimitrie Justus, Gabriella Bloniarczyk ; great grandchildren Charley, Tate, Nahla, Damon, Teagen.

Lanny is preceded in death by his parents; and brother Roger Lee Stocke.

Ruth’s survivors include daughter Tonya Moore and her son Rubin Spiegel of Chicago, Illinois; step daughter Shannon Smith of Carmi; step sons Matthew (Malysa) Stocke of Georgetown, Indiana, Tyler (Janette) Stocke of McKinney, Texas; brothers Gailon (Mary Jane) Gibbs of Salem, Illinois, Charles Gibbs of Arkansas; grandchildren Ryan (Candice) Stocke, Chris (Elissa) Smith, Trae Smith, Lain Stocke, Mason Stocke, Shelby Stocke, Carson Stocke, Rubin Spiegel, Jamison Semla, Dimitrie Justus, Gabriella Bloniarczyk; great grandchildren Charley, Tate, Nahla, Damon, Teagen.

Ruth is preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation and funeral are Sunday, February 28, 2021, at Cook Funeral Chapel in Carmi, Illinois.  Visitation is at noon and funeral is at 2 pm.  Burial is in White County Memorial Gardens near Carmi.
