Ruth Edna (Wiggins) Wood – Wayne City

96-year-old Ruth Edna (Wiggins) Wood of Wayne City, passed from this earthly life to her heavenly home on January 10.  Ruth was born May 2, 1925 to Edgar E. & Elizabeth (Davis) Wiggins.  She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Truman Lyle Wood, 7 brothers, one sister, 5 half-sisters, and her grandson Carrol Don Wood.

In 1941 she wed Truman Lyle Wood, who preceded her in death in 1998.  Together, they established a small farm northwest of Keenes.  Truman retired from Airtex, while Ruth held various jobs over the years, including:  Seamstress at the garment factories in Wayne City & Fairfield, a Tech 1 for Comprehensive Services in Mt. Vernon, a C.N.A. at the Bluford Nursing Home in Bluford, but Ruth was predominately a homemaker.  They enjoyed gardening together, working at their beloved church, and watching their children and grandchildren grow.  Ruth loved Christmas and she spent her summertime canning vegetables and peaches.

Ruth was a longtime member of the Salem Free Will Baptist Church, southwest of Keenes.  She served the church on various committees, and served as Church Secretary, Sunday School Teacher, and Deacon’s wife.  For years in her role as a Deacon’s wife, she and her husband often hosted the preacher and family to many Sunday dinners at their home following morning church service.  No one went away hungry from Ruth’s table.

Ruth is survived by her 3 children: VerDon (Glenda) Wood of Wayne City; LaVern Wood of rural Bluford; and daughter Brenda (Dale) Braddock of rural Wayne City; 3 grandchildren: Lisa (Jeff) Raines, Jennifer (Ron) Hackney, and Kimberly (Terry) Wellen; 9 great-grandchildren, a granddaughter-in-law Mary Wood, and several nieces and nephews.

There will be no public visitation due to health precautions.  A private family visitation will be held on Sunday, January 16 from 1 pm – 2 pm, with private family funeral services at 2 pm at Young Funeral Home in Wayne City with Pastor Rodney Mellott officiating.  Graveside service and interment will follow at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City, and friends & family are welcome to attend.  Those attending the graveside service are asked to meet directly at the cemetery.
