Marquetta Joyce Stewart, 88, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 5:00 am October 4, 2022 at her residence in Mount Vernon. She was born March 24, 1934 in Wayne County, Illinois to the late Harry Thrice and Lulu Ann (Musgrave) Gray. Marquetta married Ivan Stewart on December 25, 1955. They were blessed with thirty-four years of marriage before he preceded her in death on January 23, 1990.
Marquetta is survived by children, Harry Stewart and wife, Kathy of Woodlawn, Illinois, James Stewart and wife, Lynn of Atlanta, Georgia, Martin Stewart and Loriann of Newburgh, Indiana, Holly Effinger and husband, Mike of Saint Louis, Missouri; eight grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Helen (Gray) Book of Batavia, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Marquetta was preceded in death by her great-granddaughter, Cheyenne Stewart; siblings, Martin Gray, Moses Gray, Stuart Gray, Ruth (Gray) Puckett, Betty (Gray) Chalcraft, Eva Belle Gray; and parents-in-law, Buck and Velma Stewart.
Marquetta was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She worked at Walmart for many years and attended Logan Street Baptist Church.
A Visitation will be held Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 pm with Reverend Alan Smith officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield, Illinois.
