Michael Wayne Gabbard, 69, of Carmi, passed away on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at Deaconess Gateway Hospital in Newburgh, Indiana. He was born on May 2, 1954, in Harlan, Kentucky, the son of Jack Dempsey and Wanda June (Blanton) Gabbard. Mike married Kimberly Ann Saylor on May 19, 1978, and she survives. He spent most of his life working in the coal mines. Mike left Pattiki mine and eventually moved to Avon, New York, where he was a supervisor at American Rock Salt Company for close to 20 years, until he retired due to health problems. After retiring, he and Kim moved back to Carmi in April, 2021. Mike enjoyed fishing, collecting coins and presidential memorabilia. He loved riding his Harley and taking motorcycle trips with his biking buddies from time to time. However, most of all, he loved spending time with his family. In addition to his wife, Kim Gabbard of Carmi, IL, he is survived by his daughter, Becky (Jerrad) Brown of Crossville, IL; his son, Michael D. Gabbard of Mt. Morris, NY; four grandchildren, Emily Mahon, Ethan Mahon, Brody Brown and Colton Brown all of Crossville, IL; one great-grandchild, Kooper Cline; two sisters-in-law, Judy Gabbard of Williamsburg, KY, and Sandy Barrier of Wilsonville, AL; numerous nieces and nephews; and his dog, Annie. He is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Terry Gabbard and Jack Gabbard; a daughter- in-law, Beth (Hackett) Gabbard; and a brother-in-law, Albert Barrier. A private memorial service will be held for Michael Gabbard at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Michael’s memory to Pets at Risk and will be accepted at Campbell Funeral Home, 609 W. Main St., Carmi, IL 62821 who is in charge of arrangements.
