FIRE DAMAGES APARTMENT AT GARDEN GLEN COMPLEX IN MT. VERNON; INVESTIGATION UNDERWAY

A fire that damaged the living room of a second-story apartment at the Garden Glen Complex on South 34th Street in Mt. Vernon remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal, Mt. Vernon Fire Department arson investigators, and Mt. Vernon Police detectives.

According to city fire officials, the occupant of the apartment had left just a short time before the fire was discovered. Firefighters responded to the scene at 9:55 p.m. Tuesday night and worked to contain the blaze. The building was evacuated as a precaution during firefighting efforts. All residents were allowed to return to their apartments except for the occupant of the affected unit.

Authorities report that only minor smoke damage occurred outside the apartment where the fire started. No injuries were reported.

Firefighters remained on the scene investigating until 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. Jefferson Fire and Litton’s Ambulance provided mutual aid at the scene, while Kell Fire Department covered the Mt. Vernon fire station in case of another emergency.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
