Area river stages as of this morning are as follows: the Little Wabash River east of Fairfield is at 5.3 feet, below the 17-foot flood stage. At Clay City the stage is 4.87 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet. At Carmi the river is at 4.22 feet. Flood stage is 27 feet. The Skillet Fork at Wayne City is at 5.52 feet. Flood stage is 15 feet. The Wabash River at Mt. Carmel is at 3.88 feet. Flood stage is 19 feet. Bonpas Creek at Browns reads 1.81 feet this morning.
Recent rainfall has had an effect on drought in the region. The latest U.S. Drought Monitor Map from Thursday has taken Wayne County and all of southern Illinois out of any drought or abnormally dry conditions. The central and northern part of the state is still in a Moderate Drought, and areas near the Wisconsin border remain in a Severe Drought.
The current weather forecast indicates warmer weather for Sunday and Monday, and rain chances Monday and again Wednesday through the Thanksgiving holiday period, with colder temperatures. Extended forecasts running into the first days of December favor below normal temperatures and near to below normal precipitation.
