As the spring legislative session approaches, state lawmakers are preparing to tackle various energy-related issues. State Representative Dave Severin has stepped into the role of House Republican Spokesperson on the House Energy and Environmental Committee. According to Capitol News, the committee is expected to explore new energy efficiency programs and incentives for emerging energy storage technologies.

During the committee’s inaugural meeting, Severin expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve as the minority party spokesman and reaffirmed his support for coal.

“This is a very important committee, addressing energy and environmental issues that affect not only our state but also the nation and the globe,” Severin stated. “I look forward to collaborating with my fellow committee members. My goal is to provide weekly updates on the MISO (Midcontinent Independent System Operator) and PJM reports, to keep people informed about our electricity landscape and its drivers. I like coal.”

In addition to his new role, Severin also serves as the Republican ranking member of the House Higher Education Appropriations Committee. State officials warn that without legislative and agency action, Illinois may struggle to meet its goal of relying solely on clean energy by 2050.
