Albion City Council Recap from 6/5

The Albion City Council met a regular session Monday night. The Council under Visitors on Business heard from some concerned citizens about the closing of the Albion pool. The pool is in disrepair and will not be opening this season or possibly ever again. There were several problems found with the structure and drainage system, and there seemed to be problems staffing the pool and keeping qualified lifeguards.
The council approved the closing of North Fifth Street during FairFest, which will be held July 29th this year from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. The car show will also be held at the same time on the square, and the fair parade will be that morning at 10:00 AM from the K through 12 to the fairgrounds,
Mayor Wes Harris told the Council of the Resignation Monday of City Treasurer Kelly Savage. There was some discussion of making the treasurer’s position a full-time paid city position. The council will discuss this topic. At next month’s regular meeting. Mayor Harris noted that there has been a total of four treasurers either elected or appointed in the past six years.
This reminder to go on the city’s website and download that information concerning a water survey, the city desperately needs that information in the next few months.
Edwards County Supervisor of Assessment, Sheila Sniper, had a presentation on the TIF district. Sniper explained the TIF district and how it can affect taxes in the county and taxing districts. The city had discussed the possibility of a TIF district for the past few months. However, the council did vote to not enter into any more discussion concerning a TIF district.
The council at this time went into executive session to discuss possible real estate sale of city owned property. Upon returning from the executive session, the council voted to allow the city attorney to begin the process of putting 80 acres owned by the city out for bid.
