Alevia Almedia Snethen, 99, formerly of Fairfield, passed away at 10:22am on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at the home of her grandson in Cleveland, TX.

Almedia was born on April 5, 1924, in Fairfield, IL, to David and Tillie (Pittman) Gilbert. She married Alva L. Snethen and they had four children, Nancy Welch, Pasty Smock, and two infant boys.

Almedia was a homemaker who enjoyed being a wife and mother. She and Alvie lived in several different states due to his job as a pipe fitter. She loved sharing memories of places they had been. She was always by her husband’s side as they fished and gardened together. Her favorite trip was to the Holy Land, where she often shared that she was baptized a second time in the Jordan River, where Jesus was baptized. She enjoyed putting together binders of family genealogy and loved speaking to her family all over the United States to gather information. Her work was impressive as she could take you back almost 200 years. She loved her family, and she loved the Lord. She would share the word as often as possible with anyone that was willing to listen. She looked forward to seeing the face of God.

Left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, David (Cynthia) Welch of Scappoose, OR, Michael (Rebecca) Welch of Cleveland, TX, William Lowder of  Manitou, KY, and Pamela (David) Cougill of Metropolis, IL, fourteen great grandchildren, eighteen great-great grandchildren, four generations of nieces and nephews, including Darlene Herrin, Barbara Brown, and Susan Bullard who loved and cared for her for many years, her dear friends at Five Brothers Restaurant, and her closest Texas friends, Roscoe “Oscar” Warrick, Jr, Pamela Davis, Aquila Franklin, Lauren Hembree, Hayley Bourgeios, and Chaplin, Gregory Johnson.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Alva, her children, eleven siblings Lawrence Schott, Mae Harris, Tom, Roy, Virgil, and Bud Gilbert, Hannah Jones, Hazel Mix, Bernice Coubourn, Ellen Mason, and Wilma Ralston, and a granddaughter Kathy Welch.

Funeral services for Almedia Snethen will be at 12pm on Friday, June 16th, at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield, with burial to follow in Koontz Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11am until the time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the donor’s church or complete an act of kindness in Almedia’s honor.
