Some Lane Closures Suspended for 4th of July Weekend

By Tony Collins Jul 1, 2023 | 8:20 AM

The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Friday that it is opening some lanes on area highways and interstates that have been closed for construction for the 4th of July holiday weekend to minimize travel disruption.  Non-emergency closures will be suspended through Tuesday night.

However, some lane closures will remain in place for the holiday.  Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through these areas.  Drivers are urged to pay attention to changed conditions and signs in work zones, obey the posted speed limits, not use mobile devices and stay alert for workers and equipment.  Drivers are also reminded to drive sober, and drivers and passengers are reminded to buckle up.

In Marion County, lane reductions will continue on I-57 between Illinois Route 161 and the Jefferson County line, and northbound ramps on I-57 at exit 109 will remain closed.  In Jefferson County lane reductions will continue on I-57 at Dix.

Motorists are encouraged to find alternate routes if traveling in these areas.
