Local and area police agencies have responded to traffic accidents in the area and region the past few days.
According to information received by WFIW/WOKZ, an accident occurred Friday near Sims. No immediate details were available on the accident as of this morning. Fairfield police along with numerous rescue personnel and ambulance and fire personnel were called to an accident that occurred on West Elm Street near NW 5th Street around 7:45 last night. Police were on scene for at least two hours investigating. No other details were available.
Illinois State Police handled a fatal traffic crash investigation early Friday morning in Franklin County that resulted in the death of one person. The accident occurred on I-57 near the 76 mile marker, near the Jefferson-Franklin County line. Police said the driver of the first vehicle was northbound when the vehicle went off the roadway and into the median, then went into the southbound lanes and hit a second vehicle. The driver of the second vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver and passengers in the first vehicle and one passenger in the second vehicle were taken to area hospitals for treatment of their injuries. No names have been released. The accident closed I-57 in the area for most of Friday morning.
