Terry J. Legg, 80, of Fairfield, went home to be with his Lord and Savior at 8:33 a.m. on Sunday, October 1, 2023, at Fairfield Memorial Hospital Skilled Care.
Terry was born to James and Louise (Walker) Legg on April 14, 1943, in the Wayne County area. He was a well-known Wayne County farmer for over 55 years. He had a passion for helping others and was able to do that through many avenues including missions and personal generosity. He served faithfully at First Christian Church of Fairfield as Sunday School Teacher, Chairman of the Board, Chairman of the Elders, Youth Sponsor, and Chairman of the Missions Team, as well as many other duties. Terry also served his community as President and Founding Member of Boyleston Waterworks, was a County Board Member for several years, and member of the Lions Club.
He married his high school sweetheart, Carolyn Read, in 1964 in Fairfield. Their love affair lasted over 59 years. Together, they built a large grain farm and a family of three children: Clinton Legg, Amy Legg, and Rachel Jenkins. He also had five grandsons: Matthew and Nathan Legg, Brendan, Ethan, and Benjamin Jenkins. He was an amazing Dad and always made time to help, teach, and coach his kids. He was also very involved in his grandsons’ lives, building special relationships with each of them.
Terry enjoyed time with his family the most, and according to his grandsons, made the best ice cream ever! He also helped his grandsons build a cabin in the woods behind the house that they all enjoyed for several years. He spent much time riding with them on four wheelers around the farm. Terry liked to race motocross in his younger days and enjoyed antique cars and car shows. He always had a story for anyone who had time to listen.
Terry is survived by his wife Carolyn, his children Clinton (Debbie) Legg of Fairfield, Amy Legg of Saddlebrooke, MO, and Rachel (Robert) Jenkins of Chesterfield, MO., five grandsons, and a sister Kathy (James) Rayburn of Fairfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters Betty (Duane) Marshel and Sue Legg.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10am on Friday, October 6th, at the First Christian Church in Fairfield, with burial to follow in Victory Cemetery, north of Boyleston. An informal gathering with the Legg family will be held from 5-7pm on Thursday, at the church, with light refreshments to be served. The family requests casual dress. Memorial donations can be made to the First Christian Church Missions Fund and will be accepted during the services or at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
