Carl Truman Woodley, 83, of Wayne City, IL passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023 at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor in Mt. Vernon, IL.
Carl was born July 27, 1940 in Llano, TX to Arvol & Winnie (Buster) Woodley. On June 5, 1960 he married Kathleen “Kathy” (Smith) Woodley, who survives.
Carl’s first career and his passion was as a jockey, racing thoroughbred horses. He quit horse racing in order to raise his family and give them a more stable lifestyle that didn’t involve traveling the country. He worked as the power plant supervisor at the University of Texas at Austin for 37 years before retiring. He enjoyed training horses, horse racing, playing poker, and watching Dallas Cowboys and University of Texas Longhorns football. He also enjoyed going to auctions and collecting tools. He also enjoyed working under the guidance of his best friend Cecil Perkins when they sold real estate together. He enjoyed teaching his sons about horses and how to train them and race them. He was proud of the fact that both of his sons grew up to become jockeys and trainers. His greatest pride was his beautiful wife Kathy, his children, and his grandchildren.
He was a member of the Jock’s Guild and a member of the Horsemen’s Association. He was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Resurrection and was a fan of the televised John Hagee ministries.
Carl is survived by his wife Kathleen “Kathy” Woodley, daughter Missy (Doug) Collins, son Carl James (Kellye) Woodley, 8 grandchildren: Eric (Holli) Collins, Nina (Brad) Legg, Tyler Woodley, Shelby (Jordan) Greenwalt, Landon Woodley, Taylor Ervin, Emily Woodley, and Brack Woodley; 7 great grandchildren; sister-in-law Elsie Woodley, special friend Arnold Cedillo, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by both parents Arvol & Winnie Woodley, John & Missy Doss, a son John Woodley, and 2 brothers: Milford Ray Woodley (and wife Doris) and Earl Wayne Woodley.
