Jay Jason Gammon, 59, of Johnsonville, IL passed away on Wednesday October 25, 2023 at his home in Johnsonville, IL. Jay was born December 13, 1963 in Galion, OH to Johnice “Junior” Gammon and Mildred Ann (Martin) Gammon. On June 2, 2005 he married Dixie (Wells) Gammon, who survives.
Jay worked as a logger for many years, which was what he loved to do. He started working in the sawmill when he was 10 years old and quit school at the age of 14 to work there fulltime. He then went on to become an experienced lumberjack and made that his lifelong profession. He had previously worked in New Mexico in the oil fields for Aztec Well. He had previously attended the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Fairfield, IL and the Assembly of God Church in Flora, IL.
Jay was known for his kind heart, and he enjoyed helping others. He was a very friendly person who never knew a stranger. He enjoyed being in the outdoors, and he loved fishing and practicing bow archery. Every fall, he would cut & process firewood, which he would sell. He also loved music and enjoyed playing guitar. He also enjoyed watching Westerns. Most of all, he loved visiting with his friends and family.
Jay is survived by his wife Dixie (Wells) Gammon of Johnsonville, IL; 3 half-brothers: Randy Gammon of Keenes, IL; Nicky Gammon of Keenes, IL and John Gammon of New Mexico; and 3 half-sisters: Sherry Greene (and significant other Terry Talbert) of Mt. Vernon, IL; Connie Sue Hurley of Jefferson City, MO and Luellen of Texas, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents Johnice “Junior” Gammon & Mildred Ann (Martin) Gammon, a son Michael, 2 half-brothers: Rocky Gammon and Tommie Gammon, a half-sister Judy Warren, and his grandparents Gilbert & Maxine Martin and Johnice & Naomi Gammon.
Funeral services for Jay Jason Gammon will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2023 at Young Funeral Home in Wayne City, IL with pastor Andy May officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. on Friday. Interment will follow the funeral services at Baltimore Cemetery south of Wayne City.
