Stephen William Smith, 77, of Carmi, passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro, Illinois. He was born on March 20, 1946, in Mt. Vernon, Illinois, the son of Harold and Mary (Glasco) Casey. After the untimely passing of his mother, Stephen was adopted at age seven and became the son of Luther and Edith Smith. On August 22, 1965, he married Diana Kay Hunsinger and together they shared over 55 years of marriage, before her passing on September 27, 2020. Stephen was retired, having worked for the Whirlpool Corporation at Evansville, IN, for over 40 years. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and working on cars. He loved his family very much and enjoyed spending time with them.
Survivors include a son, Travis Dale Smith of Carmi, IL; grandchildren, Chrissy Smith McKay of Charleston, IL, Christopher Smith of Fairfield, IL, Trae Smith of Carmi, IL and Ryan (Candi) Stocke of Carmi, IL; 11 great-grandchildren, Blayne, Jace, Greyson, Easton, Mason, Joseph Michael Lee, Charly, Tate, Teagen, Nahla Jo and Damon; sisters, Elaine Jeffery and Becky Harmon; daughter-in-law, Shannon Smith; sisters-in-law, Connie (Randy) Barnett, Betty Hunsinger and Linda Hunsinger; 3 special nieces, Evelyn, Misty and Ronda; numerous other nieces and nephews and special friend Debbie Voliva. In addition to all his parents and his Wife Diana Kay Smith, Stephen was preceded in death by son, Tracey Steven Smith, grandson, Steven Lee Smith, sister, Donna Laur and brother, Mike Smith.
Graveside services for Stephen William Smith will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at Burnt Prairie Cemetery, in Burnt Prairie, IL, with burial following immediately. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Stephen’s Memory may be made to Spero Family Services in Mt. Vernon, IL and will be accepted by Campbell Funeral Home in Carmi, IL, who is in charge of the arrangements.
