IL Rainy Day Fund Hits $2B

State officials say the Illinois rainy day fund has topped two-billion dollars — a milestone they say they didn’t know they would reach only a few years ago. The Illinois comptroller’s office deposited 11-and-a-half million dollars into the fund recently to bring the fund to two-billion dollars. State officials say a few years ago, the fund had only 48-thousand dollars — which would have run state government for less than a minute. The rainy day fund helps Illinois pay healthcare, pharmacy and nursing home bills during times of economic downturn, such as the pandemic.
