Verla M. Meriwether, 88, Fairfield

Verla M. Meriwether, 88, of Fairfield, died at 10:55pm on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, at the Westmoreland Nursing and Rehab Center in Knoxville, TN. She had worked as the city collector for several years.

Verla was born on August 21, 1935, in Burnt Prairie, IL, to Elmer and Catherine (Doerr) Johnston. On August 17, 1957, she married the love of her life, James Meriwether. Verla was a long-time member of the Cornerstone Community Church, formerly known as the First United Methodist Church in Fairfield, where she had been a Sunday School teacher.

Survivors include her husband Jim Meriwether, three sons Larry Meriwether of Allen TX, Keith Meriwether of Knoxville, TN, and Stephen (Audrey) Meriwether of Greenfield, IN, two grandchildren Amanda (Sam) Hooper, and Logan (Emily) Meriwether, along with five great-grandchildren Clay, Hudson, Kane, Bodhi, and Banks.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother James Johnston, and a step-grandson Derek Stahl.

Funeral services for Verla Meriwether will be at 12pm on Saturday, December 9th, at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield, with burial to follow in Kingdom Cemetery near Brownsville, IL. Visitation will be from 10am until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to the Cornerstone Community Church and will be accepted at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home, which is in charge of arrangements.
