James H. Meriwether, 89, of Fairfield, died at 8:38pm on Wednesday, December 13, 2023, at the Westmoreland Nursing and Rehab Center in Knoxville, TN. He retired from Kroger in Fairfield, where he had been a meat cutter for many years.
Jim was born on July 19, 1934, in White County, to Elvis and Mildred (Anselment) Meriwether. On August 17, 1957, he married the love of his life, Verla (Johnston) Meriwether. She preceded him in death just two weeks ago, on November 29th.
Jim was a veteran of the United States Army where he was stationed in Italy. He was also a member of Cornerstone Church, formerly First United Methodist Church in Fairfield, along with the Elks Club. Before moving from Fairfield, he liked to volunteer at Feed My Sheep soup kitchen.
Survivors include his three sons Larry Meriwether of Allen, TX, Keith Meriwether of Knoxville, TX, and Stephen (Audrey) Meriwether of Greenfield, IN, two grandchildren Amanda (Sam) Hooper, and Logan (Emily) Meriwether, and five great grandchildren Clay, Hudson, Kane, Bodhi, and Banks.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Verla Meriwether, three sisters Eleanor Funkhouser, Joy Pringle, and infant sister Janet Sue Meriwether, three brothers Elmer, Harold, and Homer Meriwether, and a step-grandson Derek Stahl.
Funeral services for Jim Meriwether will be at 12pm on Thursday, December 21st at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home in Fairfield. Burial will be in Kingdom Cemetery, near Carmi, with full military rites. Visitation will be from 10am until the time of service at the funeral home. Memorial donations can be made to Feed My Sheep soup kitchen and will be accepted at the Johnson and Vaughn Funeral Home which is in charge of arrangements.
