State Police and IDOT Enforcement Efforts

The Illinois State Police and Illinois Department of Transportation are joining efforts with over 200 law enforcement agencies in the state for the annual “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign through the holiday season. The goal of the program is to keep Illinois roadways safe during the holiday season and remove impaired drivers from the roadways. The campaign runs through January 2nd.

IDOT Director of Highways Project Implementation Steve Travia is hoping the public will understand that impairment is impairment, whether by alcohol or drugs and that driving impaired is both against the law and deadly.

The end-of-year enforcement campaign comes at a time when IDOT data shows that fatal crashes are running above the number they were at during the same time in 2022. As of December 14th, data showed 1213 people had lost their lives in crashes, 11 percent more than the same period last year. Illinois State Police Division of Patrol Deputy Director, Col. Christopher Owen has announced police will be conducting roadside safety checks and performing specific patrols looking for drivers driving under the influence. Owens says to keep the holidays safe by designating a driver, using a ride-share service, or calling a cab.

Police have also issued other tips for safe holiday celebrating. They include: planning ahead if attending parties and plan for a sober driver to take you home if needed; and taking the keys away from someone you believe may be about to drive while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and get them home safely.

The law enforcement efforts are made possible through federal funds administered by IDOT and coincides with the comprehensive multimedia campaign “It’s Not A Game”.
