Larry D. Gill, age 78, of Flora, Illinois, passed away peacefully on Friday morning, December 29, 2023, at his home.

He was born December 28, 1945, in Albion, son of the late Benjamin and Genevieve (Ankenbrandt) Gill.

On August 2, 1975, Larry married the love of his life, Joyce Tolbert, in Flora. They shared 32 wonderful years until Joyce’s passing in 2007. Larry tenderly treasured the memories, and often affectionately spoke about “my Joyce.”

Larry, a proud U.S. Navy veteran, served from 1963 to 1966 and was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Bennington during deployment in the Vietnam War. He became a familiar face to many throughout his career of over 30 years with GTE as a telephone lineman, and was dedicated to keeping essential services operational for countless people and businesses.

Larry exemplified the qualities of a devoted family man and a steadfast friend. As a real outdoorsman, he found joy in hunting and fishing. He often had coffee with the guys and appreciated finding a good western to watch. He maintained a membership in the Flora VFW.

With an upbringing in the traditional Catholic faith, Larry kept a humble and personal connection to his beliefs throughout his life. A bit of his wit and wisdom will remain in the good memories of family, friends, and those who simply crossed paths with Larry, but above all, it’s the genuine kindness and appreciation he offered to others that will be especially remembered.

Larry is survived by his daughter, Lisa Ackley and her husband Darryl of Socorro, New Mexico; grandson, Rafe Ackley, and granddaughter, Mackenna Ackley, both of Socorro, New Mexico; a sister, Helen Gill of Albion; two stepchildren, Kerry Edwards and Sabrina LaClair, both of Crystal River, Florida; and four nephews, John Walsh, and Tim, Mike, and Danny Gill. Larry was preceded in passing by his parents; wife, Joyce Gill; 2 brothers, Jim and Ben Gill; and a sister, Mary Walsh.

A funeral ceremony will be held beginning at 11 a.m. Thursday, January 4, 2024, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Flora, with the presentation of military funeral honors. Visitation will be from 10 until 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers or other gifts, memorial donations are suggested to the local Flora Disabled American Veterans (DAV), and these will be accepted through the funeral home.
