It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Laverne Dale Strange, fondly known as Vern, who embarked on his final journey on February 2nd, 2024, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on January 7th, 1943, in Stillman Valley, Illinois. Vern was a loving and devoted husband and father: a treasured grandfather, great-grandfather, and brother. Vern’s spiritual journey was marked by his unwavering commitment to the Lord. Having been baptized in Jesus Name at the Jesus Name Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana. He played the cornet in his church during his younger years, participated in missions to Jamaica and Saint Kitts West Indies, and was an ordained Deacon. His dedication was evident in his role in helping manage church duties, and he found joy in operating the church tracker whenever an opportunity arose.

Beyond his spiritual endeavors, Vern showcased a remarkable work ethic throughout his over 40-year career as an over-the-road truck driver, many of the years with First Fleet, where he drove with pride from 1989 through 2016. Retiring in 2016, he accumulated millions of miles on the road, even receiving an award in 2012 for two million safe miles driven, leaving a mark on the industry. Vern’s mechanical prowess and ability to fix anything, coupled with his sense of humor, endeared him to all who knew him. His generous and caring nature, coupled with a willingness to help others, even at personal sacrifice, defined him as a compassionate and loving person.

Vern was also a skilled mechanic; many people near and far would seek out his help anytime they needed an honest mechanic with a sense of humor; he pursued interests such as photography and working with metal in his garage, showcasing a multifaceted personality. A man of rare qualities, Vern led by example, leaving a lasting legacy of a big heart, unyielding faith, and a contagious smile that brightened the darkest days.

Laverne Dale Strange will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for the profound impact he had on the lives of those around him and, most of all, his unbreaking faith in serving Jesus.
